### Paint Calculator: Estimate How Much Paint You Need

Enter room dimensions or a known paintable area to calculate paint for walls and flat ceilings. Set the number of coats and your product’s coverage to see estimated gallons and the full calculation.

### Estimate your paint

Enter project measurements and paint-label coverage to estimate the required gallons.

### Use this result as a planning estimate

The calculator shows the math from your inputs. Review the selected product and real project conditions before ordering paint.

#### What the calculator includes

**points:**

- The room dimensions or known paintable area you enter.
- Your opening deductions, ceiling choice, and number of coats.
- The coverage per gallon shown for your selected paint.
#### What you still need to verify

**points:**

- Product coverage, surface condition, porosity, and texture.
- Previous finish, color change, preparation, and application method.
- Final quantity for a specification, bid, or material order.

### How this paint calculator works

The calculator first finds the paintable area. It then applies the number of coats and divides the coated area by the coverage value you enter.

#### Room dimensions formula

##### Gross walls

2 × (room length + room width) × wall height.

##### Net area

Gross wall area − unpainted openings + an included flat ceiling.

##### Paint volume

Net area × coats ÷ coverage per gallon.

#### Known paintable area formula

##### Start with net area

Enter an area that already excludes surfaces you will not paint.

##### Apply coats

Known net paintable area × number of coats.

##### Estimate gallons

Total coated area ÷ coverage per gallon.

#### Use project-specific inputs

Measure the room or enter a known net area, subtract only unpainted openings, select the ceiling when it belongs in the same estimate, and choose the planned coat count.

#### Review every assumption

Enter the coverage stated for your paint and review the full result. The formula does not add hidden adjustments for texture, porosity, color change, application method, or waste.

### How to measure a room for paint

Floor area and wall area are different measurements. Use the room-dimensions mode to calculate four wall surfaces, or use known-area mode when you already have a measured net paintable area.

#### Measure by room dimensions

Measure length, width, and wall height from finished surface to finished surface. The calculator uses the room perimeter and wall height, not floor square footage.

#### Enter a known paintable area

Use this mode after measuring individual walls or receiving an area from a drawing. Enter the remaining net square feet after removing unpainted openings.

#### Measure openings

Measure the width and height of each door, window, or other opening you will not paint. Use actual dimensions rather than assuming every opening is the same size. If a door or other surface will be painted, leave it in the paintable area or estimate it separately with the appropriate product information.

#### Include a flat ceiling

In room mode, selecting the ceiling adds room length multiplied by room width. The calculator uses the same coats and coverage value for that combined estimate. If the ceiling will use a different paint or coat count, run it as a separate known-area calculation.

### Why actual paint coverage can vary

The calculation is consistent, but field conditions are not. Review these factors before treating the result as a final material order.

#### Product coverage

Paint products do not all use the same coverage value. Enter the figure shown on the label or technical data sheet for the product you plan to use.

#### Surface condition and porosity

Unsealed, repaired, or porous surfaces may behave differently from previously painted surfaces. This calculator does not apply a surface multiplier.

#### Texture

Textured walls have a different surface profile from smooth walls. The calculator does not estimate extra area or paint for texture.

#### Previous finish and color change

The existing finish and the difference between the current and new color can affect how the job covers. Choose the number of coats for your project rather than relying on a hidden calculator assumption.

#### Preparation and application

Preparation, tools, technique, and applied film thickness can affect real use. The result does not adjust for rolling, brushing, spraying, spills, or paint left in tools and containers.

#### What to do with these variables

Use the result as a measured baseline. Then check the selected product, room condition, and application plan. The calculator does not add an automatic waste allowance, touch-up reserve, or confidence score.

### A clearer estimate for early project planning

The calculator is designed to make the inputs and assumptions easy to review. It supports early planning; it is not a construction takeoff, specification, or bid.

#### Architects and architectural designers

Check a measured interior wall or room area while comparing early finish directions. Keep the area, coats, and product coverage visible when discussing the estimate.

#### Interior designers and small studios

Create a room-level planning baseline before the paint product and final material order are confirmed. Run separate calculations when surfaces, colors, coat counts, or products differ.

#### Design consultants and students

Use the formula breakdown to understand how room geometry, openings, and coats affect an estimate. Verify the result before using it in a project submission or client recommendation.

#### Homeowners

Estimate one room without calculating every wall by hand. The room mode handles the four walls, while optional opening and ceiling controls keep the included area clear.

### Example: calculate paint for one room

The values below are example inputs used only to show the calculation. They are not recommended dimensions, a default coverage rate, or a purchase recommendation. Use your own measurements and the coverage stated for your paint.

#### Example inputs

##### Room

12 ft long × 10 ft wide × 8 ft high.

##### Openings

One 3 × 7 ft door and two 3 × 4 ft windows.

##### Paint settings

Flat ceiling, 2 coats, and example-only coverage of 350 sq ft per gal.

#### Area calculation

##### Gross walls

2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft.

##### Deductions and ceiling

352 − 21 − 24 + 120 = 427 sq ft net paintable area.

##### Coated area

427 × 2 coats = 854 sq ft.

#### Estimated paint: 2.44 gal

854 ÷ 350 = 2.44 gal. This example stops at calculated volume; it does not round to containers or add primer, price, waste, or a touch-up reserve.

### Paint calculator FAQ

#### How do I calculate paint for the walls in a room?

Enter the room length, width, and wall height. The calculator finds the area of the four walls, subtracts any unpainted openings you add, multiplies the net area by the number of coats, and divides by the coverage value from your paint label.

#### Should I subtract doors and windows?

Subtract an opening when you will not paint it. In room mode, add the actual width and height of each unpainted opening. In known-area mode, enter an area that already excludes openings and do not deduct them again.

#### Does the result include one coat or multiple coats?

The result uses the number of coats you select. The assumption summary shows that number beside the estimate, so it is not hidden.

#### Does the paint estimate include the ceiling?

Only when you select Include a flat ceiling in room mode. The calculator adds room length multiplied by room width and uses the same coat count and coverage rate. If the ceiling uses a different product or coat count, calculate it separately.

#### What should I enter for coverage per gallon?

Use the coverage shown on the paint label or technical data sheet for the product you plan to use. The calculator does not supply a universal default because coverage can differ by product and project conditions.

#### Why might I use more or less paint than the estimate?

Actual use can change with the product, surface condition, porosity, texture, previous finish, color change, preparation, and application method. The calculator uses the values you enter and does not apply hidden surface or waste adjustments.

#### Is primer included?

No. The result estimates finish paint only. Primer can have its own coverage and coat requirements, so check the selected primer’s product information and calculate it separately.

#### Is this paint estimate exact?

No. It is a planning estimate based on your measurements, coat count, and entered coverage. It does not guarantee a purchase quantity or replace a project-specific material check.

#### Can I use floor square footage to estimate wall paint?

Floor area is not the same as wall area. Use room dimensions to calculate the four walls, or measure the paintable walls and enter their combined net area in known-area mode.

#### How can designers use this calculator?

Designers can use it as an early room or measured-area planning check while comparing finish directions. The visible formula and assumptions make the estimate easier to review, but the result is not a construction takeoff, specification, or bid.
